The podcast provided me with interesting information about employment performance. I think that doing any job for a long period of time becomes uninspiring without seeing the significance of your effort. The results by the study performed that showed employees the benefits they have brought into other people's lives were much more effective than I would have thought. Task significance had a lasting effect, like the life guards who read just four articles about the impact other life guards made on people's lives. 6 months later they were still committing three extra hours a week, proving that task significance is a powerful aspect to the job. Motivation through just increased wages and benefits may have a short term positive effect, but it does not change the emotional feeling of the employee while doing their job. I agree that employees do not have a self-interest in their work but do genuinely care about making a difference in other people's lives, and do care about how meaningful their job feels. This gives employees a deeper sense of purpose and satisfaction that a bonus cannot provide.
