This is a documentary about gangs in Stanislaus County. This 30-minute video includes interviews with police, local leaders, prosecurors, an ex-gang member and a secondary victim. Some of the images are a little graphic as they show victims of gang violence. The video does include a number of social theories (social disorganization, differential association, social learning, strain & subculture) that explain violence and makes a good discussion after viewing. I use in my Sociology of Violence Course.

This learning object has been developed to be delivered in a blended learning environment. That is, the e-learning content, or e-tivities, are used to extend and enhance the traditional classroom/lecture hall/studio method of teaching. In this case, e-tivities have been developed to sit alongside a newsroom based journalism course where students attend lectures, or 'newsroom activities', then afterward participate in on-line e-tivities, discussing their conclusions in a forum.

Casting Oedipus

The Greek Theatre of Sophocles and Euripides used three actors to perform all of the named character roles. (This does not include the Chorus or supernumerary, non-speaking roles.) These three actors used masks and costume changes to transform themselves from one character to the next. While we often think of the onstage action of Greek plays, we don’t take into account how those three men played a variety of roles. For example, in Oedipus, there are 8 characters...The task in this exercise is to determine how to use three actors (let’s call them ACTOR A, ACTOR B and ACTOR C) in casting Oedipus. How do they double (triple? Quadruple?) up to play all the roles, and have time to change costume and masks.

This site was developed and is tended by Dave Shea, www.mezzoblue.com. Dave is aweb designer and co-author of the book, The Zen of CSS Design, The site is one page website with many cascading style sheets attached. It demonstrates that websites created using standard CSS and XHTML can be graphically intense without editing any of the XHTML code. I use this in lecture by displaying the site in Firefox with the web developer extension added and demonstrating to students the power of using CSS by turning off styles and switching style sheets.

Site was developed by Eric Meyer and he states the site is "It's a challenge, an experiment, an exploration, a rough map of where we haven't been. It's a search for new ways to approach Web-based design. It's a cry for creativity, and a stab at innovation. It's a playground and a proving ground. It's a rejection of what's practical in favor of what's possible."
