Essential Science for Teachers: Life Science

Essential Science for Teachers courses are designed to help elementary school teachers gain an understanding of some of the bedrock science concepts they need to teach standards-based curricula. Life Science consists of eight one-hour video programs accompanied by print and Web materials that provide in-class activities and homework explorations. Real-world examples, demonstrations, animations, still graphics, and interviews with scientists compose content segments that are intertwined with in-depth interviews with children that uncover their ideas about the topic at hand. Each program also features an elementary school teacher and his or her students exploring the topic using exemplary science curricula. Use the complete course for teacher education or professional development, or individual programs for content review.

Harvard-Smithsonian Digital Video Library (HSDVL)

Although still somewhat incomplete, the Harvard-Smithsonian Digital VideoLibrary is now available for preview and user feedback. For this project, video segments are being linked to benchmarks, state standards, and otherinstructional criteria. The Strand Map Service (SMS), which uses maps basedon the Project 2061 Atlas of Science Literacy, is a new feature that letsyou use interactive strand maps as the interface for accessing resources. Many of the boxes (=learning goals) are still unlinked, but if you download and install the suggested plug-in (instructions aresupplied on the web site), you will find many videos associated with the Atlas. The long-term goal is to populate the boxes sothat various types of curriculum resources such as phenomena andrepresentations, research on commonly held student ideas, benchmarkclarifications, and assessment items are available to the end-user. The SMScan be embedded into any digital library that wishes to organize itsresources around K-12 benchmarks. The developers are interested to get yourfeedback!
