How People Learn, a National Academy Press book

This book presents a contemporary account of the principles of learning. It provides an authoritative and comprehensive review of the research literature on issues in teaching and learning. The National Academy Press is neither a government publication center nor a federal office of any kind. Rather, this is the publication arm of the National Academies, and their mission is to make public the fruits of research performed by the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. The Open Book page image presentation framework is not designed to replace printed books, nor emulate HTML. Rather, it is a free, browsable, nonproprietary, fully and deeply searchable version of the publication which we can inexpensively and quickly produce to make the material available worldwide. The goals include the following:- full-text searching, - easy, predictable, direct links to any page, - a consistent site-wide interface structure, - rapid page access (even for those with 28.8 modems). The 150 dpi PDF linked to it is printable on your local printer.

SimSchool

This simulation allows the user to experiment with the philosophical perspectives of objectivism and constructivism and observe the influence on several educational micro-dimensions (eg. motivation, experience, learning outcomes, control) as well as consider what the impact a philosophical shift would have on several macro-dimensions (e.g. high school graduation rate, crime rate, etc.). The simulation also tries to clarify the relationship between philosophical orientation and instructional strategies. (Please note that the model on which this simulation is based has not been validated and should not be viewed other than one person's interpretation of some complex issues. It is meant as an interesting and interactive means to clarify some key issues related to educational philosophy and instructional practice.)

How tablet PCs empower the classroom.

Dr. Bugallo received a grant from Hewlett Packard (HP) of 21 tablet PCs and audiovisual equipment that she uses in her classroom. Students use these computers to take notes which include illustrations and graphs, and to do programming and simulations. Matlab is used for simulations, Word, OneNote and Journal are used for note taking. In addition, students use the laptops to gather data in the field during research projects. The Tablet PC enables Monica to use math simulation software for live exercises in the classroom. Monica finds that students at all levels (high school, under grad and grad) adapt quickly to using the computers and that her classes have been transformed from a purely theoretical approach to applied problem solving. Dr. Bugallo’s students use Wikis to keep a log of activities, pose questions to her on the content and reflect on their learning. The advantage of online Wiki’s over a paper-based approach is that it enables students to share knowledge among them and review each other’s work. They are also more motivated as they often show their work to friends and family.
