STILL CASTING SHADOWS: A Shared Mosaic of U.S. History Vol. I, 1620-1913

"Still Casting Shadows: A Shared Mosaic of U.S. History" breaks with tradition by presenting a holistic (rather than a white-centric and politician-dominated) portrayal of American History. It begins with the arrival of the Puritans at Plymouth, Massachusetts, and follows the descendants of two Mayflower passengers, John Howland and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland, forward to the present day. Along the way, events as wide-ranging as colonial-era Indian battles, the defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg during the Civil War, a devastating ambush in Vietnam, and a heroic deed by a California Highway Patrol officer are examined from the personal perspective of those on the scene. Much more than simply a volume of family history, Still Casting Shadows is a concise outline of American history. As such, it includes hundreds of short chapters that cover upwards of a thousand events of national import. Each chapter begins with striking quotations that illuminate the events being discussed.

Through our Parents' Eyes: Tucson's diverse community

A University of Arizona web exhibit. The Hispanic Community has been instrumental in transforming Tucson from an isolated Spanish military outpost in the late 1700's, to the bustling Southwestern city it is today. Hispanic Americans have been involved in all aspects of community affairs since the founding of the city by Spanish-speaking settlers in 1775. Indeed, much of the cultural flavor of Tucson can be traced to our Hispanic roots. This exhibit traces the history of Hispanic Americans in Tucson, explaining the strong ties Tucson has with the Spanish and Mexican cultures.

Hooves & Rails:A History of the Tucson Street Railway 1897 - 1906

This University of Arizona web exhibit traces the history of the railway in the region. In the late nineteenth century, Tucson was a growing town with a strong desire to project a metropolitan image. One key to continued development was the establishment of dependable public transportation to move Tucsonans around their newly bustling city. This is the story of the first streetcar line: the horse-drawn Tucson Street Railway.
