This website is a teaching commons resulting from a partnership between MERLOT and the author of the site. Other MERLOT partner communities can be found here: http://www.merlot.org/merlot/index.htm?action=communities'The Mathematics Education Community in the CSU is a community of members-CSU faculty, K-12 Mathematics Teachers throughout California, K-12 Administrators, interested Legislators and of particular importance Preservice through Induction year mathematics teachers including undergraduate and credential students and those in their first three years of teaching mathematics. The Mathematics Education Community in the CSU is based upon the concept of a “teaching commons” whereby the community of California’s K-12 Mathematics Teachers and university Mathematics Teacher Educators advance and promote the scholarship of teaching and learning mathematics through sharing of ideas, practices, and information, and resources.'Can Automated Scoring Surpass Hand Grading of Students' Constructed Responses and Error Patterns in Mathematics?
http://www.merlot.org/merlot/viewMaterial.htm?id=875493
A unique online parsing system that produces partial-credit scoring of students' constructed responses to mathematical questions is presented. The parser is the core of a free college readiness website in mathematics. The software generates immediate error analysis for each student response. The response is scored on a continuous scale, based on its overall correctness and the fraction of correct elements. The parser scoring was validated against human scoring of 207 real-world student responses (r = 0.91). Moreover, the software generates more consistent scores than teachers in some cases. The parser analysis of students' errors on 124 additional responses showed that the errors were factored into two groups: structural (possibly conceptual), and computational (could result from typographical errors). The two error groups explained 55% of students' scores variance (structural errors: 36%; computational errors: 19%). In contrast, these groups explained only 33% of the teacher score variance (structural: 18%; computational: 15%). There was a low agreement among teachers on error classification, and their classification was weakly correlated to the parser's error groups. Overall, the parser's total scoring closely matched human scoring, but the machine was found to surpass humans in systematically distinguishing between students' error patterns.Quadratic Formula Solver App for iOS

'Quadratic Formula Solver solves for the real (or complex) roots and the discriminant of quadratic equations.Quadratic equations are frequently used in many high school and college level courses; including Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics.'This app has been recommended by Kathy Schrock as an evaluating tool in Bloom's taxonomy. This is a free app.Numbler Free App for iOS
http://www.merlot.org/merlot/viewMaterial.htm?id=874344
'You’ve played games forming words from letters, but how well can you form equations from numbers? Numbler is a game where players build math equations in a familiar crossword style board. All the mental fun of popular board and online word games, but with numbers instead of letters. FEATURES: ▪ Simple and addictive gameplay that people love from well-known word games ▪ A fun and educational way for students to sharpen their math skills ▪ Suitable for all ages: children to adults PLACING TILES Players take turns forming or extending equations in a horizontal or vertical direction. Tiles must be placed according to the following rules: 1. Each turn must use at least 1 tile from the board and 2 tiles from your hand 2. All adjacent tiles must be part of a true and complete equation 3. Tiles cannot be moved once they are played 4. Players may choose to pass and forfeit their turn 5. The game ends when both players pass twice in succession SCORING The score for a turn is the sum of each digit in the equations formed or extended during that turn, according to the following rules: 1. Operator and equal sign tiles have no score value but do help capture bonus tiles. 2. The value of two consecutive number tiles is the sum of their individual values. So a 1 and 2 tile placed beside each other has a value of 3, not 12 3. The value of a created or extended equation is increased or multiplied by bonus tiles covered by tiles placed during the turn'This is a free appfxIntegrator App for iOS
