This project sought to strengthen the achievement of students enrolled in high-impact mathematics courses. While SI targeting key courses rather than particular groups of students, a secondary benefit of SI was to help reduce the achievement gap between groups of students who have traditionally been underrepresented in the STEM fields. In SI, students worked in structured collaborative groups on challenging problems based on timely material presented in their lecture classes. Each of the SI sessions was led by an undergraduate student who has strong content and communication skills. SI leaders attended the class sessions to ensure that their SI sessions are current and to act as a role model for students in the course. SI leaders then met with students at least three hours per week to creatively work on problems and study skills based on that week’s lessons in a highly interactive setting.
