Casting Oedipus

The Greek Theatre of Sophocles and Euripides used three actors to perform all of the named character roles. (This does not include the Chorus or supernumerary, non-speaking roles.) These three actors used masks and costume changes to transform themselves from one character to the next. While we often think of the onstage action of Greek plays, we don’t take into account how those three men played a variety of roles. For example, in Oedipus, there are 8 characters...The task in this exercise is to determine how to use three actors (let’s call them ACTOR A, ACTOR B and ACTOR C) in casting Oedipus. How do they double (triple? Quadruple?) up to play all the roles, and have time to change costume and masks.

Personal Ads and Shakespeare

Personal ads are a way of communicating to others the person you are, or the person you want to be, in the hopes of attracting friends or a mate. As a result, language choices, descriptions, and key phrases are often specifically calculated to provoke a particular reaction—or attraction. At the same time, the text of ads often reveals things about the ad writer in the same way that a playwright would reveal a character’s subtext. In this assignment, we will discuss the language used in personal ads (assuming that it is indeed reflecting the inner thoughts of the ad writer), examine some personal ads online, and then apply it to character study in a play, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

Action Haikus

Writing haikus can be a useful writing exercise; it combines the need for a tight structure and much creativity to say something of note within that tight structure. The Action Haiku, which follows the traditional form of three lines of 5-7-5 syllables, raises the stakes for creativity by adding the elements of performance. The Action Haiku must include at least one physical action and one sound effect.
