This project is about introducing the concept of Extensive Reading to second language learners, especially English learners, who are already high beginner or above and new to using Extensive Reading. In the Japanese context, these are likely to be students just starting university English courses or possibly in high school courses with Extensive Reading. Instructional Objectives: Learn the basic principles of Extensive Reading (ER)Learn the benefits of doing Extensive Reading Contrast Extensive Reading (ER) with Intensive Reading (IR)Learn about some types of materials (Graded Readers, Levelled Readers, etc.) and how to choose and use appropriate materialsLearners encounter an introduction, an embedded video, to activate schema related to reading and English learning. Next they are taken through slides that will introduce the principles of ER, the benefits of doing ER, and contrast ER with IR. Next are slides comparing and contrasting graded readers, leveled readers and authentic materials and two simple role-plays for choosing materials.
Stand Alone Instructional Resource: Basic Comma Usage

This is a stand alone instructional resource (STAIR) that I created to provide my students with basic comma usage review and practice. The powerpoint is interactive; I start by modeling how sentences sound with and without commas. The powerpoint also asks students to make observations on when commas are used and then provides students with notes on three major comma usage rules. Finally, students test their understanding with a short quiz. If students get a question wrong they can revisit the notes or try answering the question again.
