Title: Complex Numbers
Description: To exoplre the idea of complex numbers, I will engage the students in groups of four or five to complete the activities that involve with discriminant in quadratic equations. Once the students have basic understanding of the roots and discriminant of the quadratic equations, I will give them some problems which have complex roots. Also, the students will learn how to add, substract, multiply, and graph the comploex numbers in cartesian plane.
Type of Task: Group, Student-centered, Supervised
Time Required one hour
Topics: Complex Numbers--Roots, addition, subtractaction, and multiplication of the complex mumbers.
Course: Algebra 2
Audience: High School
Prerequisites Skills: The students should know how to factor, solve, and graph the quadratic equations.
Learning Objectives: • Classify and find all the roots of a quadratic equation. • Graph and perform operations such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication on complex numbers.
Technical Notes: The student will use graphing calcualator to graph the complex numbers.
Text of Learning Exercise: on hold
Additional Information URL: Text book by James E. Schultz
Assessment: After the presentation, i will pass out a five minute quiz. I will be looking for if the students can find complex roots of a quadratic equation. Also, they must know that how to add, subtract, and multiply the complex numbers.
