Text of Learning Exercise: AlternativeSolutions: The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a controversial piece of legislation. It inflamed the passions of Southerners and Northerners alike. Read the specifics of the bill at http://dig.lib.niu.edu/message/about.html . (Once at the site, click on “Second Party System”. Then click on “Political Events”. Finally, click on “The Kansas-Nebraska Act”.) Rewrite the bill giving an alternative solution so both sides could live with the compromise. Post your bill rewrite to the discussion board. The discussion for the weak will be to argue and defend your bill. At the end of the week, the class will vote on the bill that would be the most compromising to both the North and the South.
