Description: This exercise leads the student through a series of exercises illustrating the challenges of communicating with extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way. Learning goals: 1, To understand how the number of communicating civilizations in the Milky Way depends on the appearance frequency and duration of extraterrestrial civilizations (the Drake Equation). 2. To understand how the number of signals arriving at Earth at any given time depends on these parameters. 3. To understand why two-way communication with extraterrestrial civilizations is much more difficult than just receiving a message.
