Material: Learning with Mnemonics in Therapeutic Modalities
Submitted by: Samar McCann on Dec 09, 2011
Date Last Modified: Dec 09, 2011
Title: Making Mnemonics
Description: Please review the mnemonics within the Therapeutic Modalities Article. Many of them should be familiar to you such as RICE or SAMPLE. Since electrical stimulation units have a variety of settings, come up with a mnemonics or the used of one common waveform.
Type of Task: Group, Supplemental Activity
Time Required 60 mins
Topics: Electrotherapy, application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)
Course: Therapeutic Modalities
Audience: College Upper Division
Categories:
Prerequisites Skills: Prior knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, preferably included as an end of the semester assignment during a therapeutic modalities course (unless therapeutic modalities have already been introduced in a previous course).
Learning Objectives: To create a method of memorizing the common applications of NMES (Edema control, spasm, and reduction) by utilizing one of the four mnemonics strategies used in the article.
Text of Learning Exercise: Students will be work in groups of 3-4. Each group must develop a mnemonic based on the one common usage of Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) . The specific NMES parameters for edema, muscle spasm, or re-education can be found in the textbook in the Electrotherapy section. The mnemonic will be used to memorize the appropriate settings for NMES application. The included Therapeutic Modalities article provides examples of 4 types of mnemonics. Each group should used the article as a guide to develop a new mnemonic specific to the selected NMES usage. Please provide a description of which type of mnemonic the group used at the beginning of your assignment. Please upload your assignment (.doc or .ppt files only) into the appropriate moodle link.
Assessment: Grading rubric: Utilized and described a specific type of mnemonic 10 pts Included key settings of NMES application 10pts Creative, Organized and correct submission 10 pts
