Understanding and Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Week: El descubrimiento de America y El dia de la raza
This assignment includes four tasks which involve reading the information in the learning object about Columbus' discovery of America and El dia de la raza, and researching other companion websites. The first and second task involves using past time to report on the four crossings and information about the three ships. The third task requires the student to write a summary paragraph about Columbus' life. The fourth task involves selecting and reading ariticles and Spanish and English on the same topics, and then writing a reaction paragraph as to the student's own impressions on what el dia de la raza means to them.
Part of the assignment can be completed during class time and working in pairs if the instructor and students have use of a computer language lab. If not, then the instructor needs to assign the worksheet to be completed outside of class. The initial writing drafts need to be reviewed before successive drafts are completed. The writing may be incorporated into a writing portfoloio.

The required skills are reading and speaking at an intermediate proficiency level. The reader needs practice in the use of preterite and imperfect tenses. The writing process requries narration, description, and some expository writing skills. Some drafts and revisions will be required in which students can also be peer-editors.
The objectives of this learning assignments is to: a. develop an understanding of why Oct. 12th is celebrated in the Spanish-speaking world. b. to have a concept of history about the discovery of America c. to be able to relate something about Columbus' life d. to understand and communicate what el dia de la raza means on a personal level e. to incorporate language and the social sciences in a content-based lesson f. to create a sense of pride and self-worth among Spanish Heritage Speakers
