Title: Transforming Science Education into an Evidence-based Field
Description: Mathematics and science are often the great separators rather than equalizers. They are the gatekeeper subjects. Without advanced courses in science and mathematics, students are excluded from educational opportunities and experiences that can affect their career aspirations, their role in society, and even their sense of fulfillment. Our standards address this reality. Federal funding has been aimed at helping children from communities that have been historically left behind catch up in science. Now the government demands that materials for programs with federal funding be exclusively ?evidence-based? resources. The student's task for this assignment is to delve a little deeper into what it means to transform education into an ?evidence-based? field. Upon completion of this assignment, they should have a deeper understanding of how "Action Research" makes them a participant in a national community of science education investigators.
Time Required 2 weeks
Topics: science education, action research
Course: SCED552 Research in Science Education
Learning Objectives: Write about some current recommendations for science education research.

Highlight some approaches to research viewed by recent publications as important.

Outline to what extent a plan for an action research project follows published guidelines for the transformation of science education into an ?evidence-based? field.
Technical Notes: The essays are peer reviewed using Calibrated Peer Review. Students learn from writing but they also learn from reading the work of others.

Now the government demands that materials for programs with federal funding be exclusively ?evidence-based? resources.

Your task for this assignment is to delve a little deeper into what it means to transform education into an ?evidence-based? field. Write about some current recommendations for science education research. Highlight some approaches to research viewed by recent publications as important. Then outline to what extent your action research project follows published guidelines, so that we understand to what extent your work will contribute to the transformation of science education into an ?evidence-based? field. Find articles that justify a research approach you might use for your action research project. Review all the source materials resources, but do not use them all. Select and use only those that justify and clarify your research plan for your semester project. Be sure to reference enough publications to show awareness of both the validity and the limitations of the method you plan to use.
