Text of Learning Exercise: ELL Literacy with NASA: El Nino-Strange Weather Indeed!
Grade Level: Twelfth Grade
Objectives: 1. Students will read and analyze text. 2. Students will learn about
El Nino. 3.Students will create a written (presentable) artifact showing their
idea of textual meaning.
CDE Language Arts: Reading Comprehension and Analysis: 2.4. Make warranted and
reasonable assertions about the author's arguments by using elements of the text
to defend and clarify interpretations.?2.5 Analyze an author's implicit and
explicit philosophical assumptions and beliefs about a subject.
CDE Science: Heating of
Earth's surface and atmosphere by the sun drives convection within the
atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents. 5g: Students know
features of the El Ni├▒o southern oscillation cycle in terms of sea-surface and
air temperature variations across the Pacific and some climatic results of this
cycle. CDE-ELL Literacy Component: Concept Development: Apply
knowledge of academic and social vocabulary while reading independently. Be able
to use standard dictionary to find the meanings of unfamiliar words. Interpret
the meaning of unknown words by using knowledge gained from previously read
text. Understand idioms, analogies, and metaphors in conversation and written

drawings in order to support their understanding. 2. Allow for multiple

own and student ORAL delivery of content. 6. Pre-teach conceptof El Nino (use
multiple images). 7. Teacher and students are to be involved in guided reading.
8. Students must report (orally) what they understand. 9. Student teams must
create a written artifact.
