University of Sioux Falls Instructor: Tim Homan MERLOT Lesson
Purpose: To demonstrate how MERLOT can be used in developing lessons in an education methods course.
Objectives: 1. The student will develop a cooperative learning lesson using the Jigsaw method. 2. The student will develop a rubric to assess the lesson. 3. The student will produce a power point presentation to provide direction for their students. 4. The student will use the MERLOT website as a guide to developing the lesson.
Materials: 1. Computer Lab with internet access. 2. Website- www.merlot.org 3. Curriculum material for guidance in developing the cooperative lesson (jigsaw).
Input: 1. The students will be introduced to MERLOT. 2. The instructor will guide the students through an introduction of MERLOT. 3. The term jigsaw will be defined.
Modeling and Guided Practice: 1. The instructor will guide the students through the exercise. 2. The instructor will answer any questions throughou
t the demonstration. 3. The instructor will provide 3 sites on MERLOT for guidance in the lesson. Use the following directions to get to the 3 sites: a. Type in merlot.org b. Click on member directory. c. Type in Tim Homan. d. Click on Tim Homan. e. Click on personal collections. f. Click on triad collections. g. Click on your choice of the three sites. h. Click on location to find information.
Independent Practice: 1. The student will create a jigsaw lesson for their content area. 2. The student will create a rubric to assess the jigsaw. 3. The student will put the instructions in power point form.
Closure: The instructor will answer any questions the students may have on the lesson. The students will be prepared to demonstrate the lesson they create.
