MARS VOLCANOES


Scientists at JPL have just created the most detailed map of Mars ever made!
The scientists have found what they think are four giant volcanoes on the
surface of Mars. NASA has asked for your help in determining what kind of
volcanoes these are.
FIRST, you will look for evidence that the four locations are actually
volcanoes by looking for a caldera at its peak. SECOND, you will measure the
height and width of the volcanoes and compare your results to volcanoes here on
Earth. THIRD, you will decide which kind of volcano each one is.

Materials
Mars Topographic Map (MOLA), Earth Volcanoes Data Table, Ruler, Calculator

Directions
(1) For each volcano: Using your ruler and your Mars map, measure the width of
the caldera (the sunken-in part at the top of the volcano) in centimeters (cm).
Record your measurement in the data table.
(2) Using your ruler and the scale on your map, determine how wide each caldera
is in kilometers (km) and record this in the data table.
(3) For each volcano: Using your ruler and your map, measure the width of the
volcano in centimeters. You will have to come to a group decision on what area
the volcano covers. Record your measurements in the data table.
(4) Use your ruler and the scale on your map to determine the actual size of
each volcano in kilometers. Record your measurements in the data table.
(5) Use the color coding on your map to determine the maximum height of each
volcano in kilometers. Record in the data table.
(6) For each volcano: Find the slope in degrees by taking the inverse tangent
of [height divided by ½ of width]. Show your math in the calculations box.
Record your result in the data table.
(7) Come to a decision as a group as to which type of volcano you think each
location is.
