Data Modeling: Finding the Perfect Fit

Rating: 4 stars
Used in Course: Not used in course
Submitted by: Emrah Orhun (Faculty), Dec 29, 2001
Comment: My comments are based on the feedback I received from 10 graduate students in
the Applied Systems Analysis class as well as my own review which took about 20
minutes. I asked the students to review and rate the material using the
evaluation criteria of MERLOT. The median for the overall value to the course
was 4. The time spent by the students to review the material ranged from 15
minutes to 2.5 hours with most of the reviews taking 20-30 minutes.

The students found the material useful as a good and easy to understand
introduction to entity relationship modeling. The examples were considered to be
clear. The material did not cover data normalization which was included in the
relevant chapter of the textbook used.

The material is a good teaching supplement that can be used in introducing data

Technical Remarks:

The students were able to use the program easily and no problems were
experienced with the interface.

The material is straight text and some students indicated the need to practice
the concepts introduced. Students mostly preferred reading the material from a
printed copy. Some students mentioned that a link at the end of each section
that would take the user back to the top of the page is needed.
