CSU San Marcos has provided a comprehensive list of resources used in four (4) of its university-level Human Development courses. The resources provided include articles, videos, books, and websites that serve as reference material for students.
Type of Material:
Reference Material
Recommended Uses:
The majority of the resources included are reading materials, including online (web-based, freely available) and peer-reviewed journal articles.
The document can be used as a resource for course preparation and development. Instructors may identify and select web links, videos, or articles for inclusion in a course.
The document may be used in its present form as a support resource that instructors can edit for use and distribution in a particular course. References can be added or deleted as needed. The Google Doc format allows for easy editing and linking to course websites.
Independent as well as group research projects on human development will both benefit from the list of resources provided in this site.
Technical Requirements:
The collection of resources is a Google Doc that can be accessed with any web browser.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Through reviewing the provided resources, students will learn about Human Development throughout the lifespan (childhood, adolesence, and adulthood).
The major goal of the collection is to extend knowledge of human development across the broad areas of growth, development, and aging.
Target Student Population:
College General Ed, College Lower Division, College Upper Division, Graduate School
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
No prerequisite knowledge is required; however, students with a general understanding of basic human growth and development, and those who have completed introductory psychology, will benefit most from these more advanced resources.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
Content quality is exceptional, and much of the selected, curated resources (particularly in the fourth course) were peer-reviewed and illuminated new and "up and coming" research in the field of human development.
The document includes a diverse range of topics related to Human Development and incorporates a broad array of resources ranging from websites to articles to videos.
Concerns:
Instructors should check for copyright restrictions when using certain journal article links (e.g., American Psychologist).
Some links take the user to the CSU San Marcos library. These links are not accessible to all.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This collection brings a wide range of surfable, contemporary resources to the study of Human Development which may easily be shared across multiple courses and would serve as a great point of reference for a certificate or degree program epicenter course.
Concerns:
Brief annotations of each resource would be very beneficial and would help instructors make choices about which ones might be most relevant for their own courses and students. Annotations also would be helpful for students as they read through the list of resources (and instructors may wish to develop these for use in their own courses).
As noted earlier, the document contains numerous links to the CSU San Marcos Library. Instructors who are interested in these articles will want to locate them in their own university libraries.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The document is organized by Human Development area/course, and the Google Doc format provides an easily navigable and editable format.
Concerns:
The navigation with this Google Doc may be improved by adding a quick-link to each of the four topics (courses) at the top of the material, with a simple method of link anchoring to allow the general user to quickly jump to each of the four areas (along with an option to return to top). This would significantly improve the usability of this reference list.
Users will find some broken links.
