This is an interactive game allowing users an opportunity to practice skills relating to plotting points on a coordinate plane. In the game, users are asked to “stock the shelves” by plotting points so that each item is placed in the correct location.
Stock the Shelves is a fun way for students to reinforce their skills in using a coordinate plane. The game does require students to understand negative numbers in a coordinate plane as well as positive numbers. The idea is to help a store clerk "stock the shelves" with drinks such as soda and chocolate milk before customers arrive. Each bottle must be positioned in its exact location. Students have two minutes to position all 20 bottles.
Type of Material:
Simulation
Recommended Uses:
The material is well suited for individual practice. It could also be incorporated into a group activity.
Technical Requirements:
Any Browser
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The main goal of this site is to allow users to practice plotting points on a coordinate plane. This is an application of coordinate plane system to stock the shelves of a store.
Target Student Population:
Grade-School, Middle School, High School, College Lower Division
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Basic Geometry - Cartesian coordinate system
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
It is an interactive game and it allows the user to plot the point in the coordinate. If it is correct, a cap is displayed and if it is wrong, a wrong sign is displayed. There is a time limit to finish the game.
The game is colorful and user-friendly. Clear instructions are provided. Students are given unlimited attempts to plot each point correctly within the time limit.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
This game is a nice tool for allowing students to practice plotting points in the coordinate plane. As the activity is presented in the context of a game, it may be more likely to hold a user’s attention. Within the given time limit, students can keep trying until they plot each point correctly.
It is an effective tool to practice (+,+),(+,-),(-,+),(-,-) coordinate points in a plane.
It is a time-based game, but allows mistakes and retry.
It shows the score at the end of the game. (10 points for 1 bottle).
To win the user has to score 200 points i.e. 20 bottles placed in the right coordinate in 2 min.
Concerns:
This game might be improved by including a hint or an example if a student plots a point incorrectly after several attempts.
Though it is fun and interactive game, it will require the help of an instructor to guide the user if they score less than 200 points, score low or if users’ response is slow.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The game is colorful and easy to use.
