Strengths:

Snapseed offers an excellent selection of photo-editing tools. The editing with Snapseed can be done in a non-destructive way meaning users can go back and correct any edit to their liking. There are selective edit brushes and a nice selection of photographic filters. The app can be used by beginners and experienced photographers alike. The app is free and advertisement free.

Concerns:
  • Instructs the user to download Bluestacks - an android emulator.
  • You can use any android emulator to download the Snapseed app and use on a Mac.
  • Some problems adding text to images.
  • Some issues with exporting images

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Strengths:

Snapseed offers users the ability to edit many things like saturation, brightness, contrast, shadows, curves, and more. The user has total control over the end result. Because the editing is nondestructive, users can always go into the Stack (the layers of edits) and adjust or eliminate any edit (including correcting misspelled text). Or users can use a Stacks brush to apply an effect to only a portion of your picture. Users do need to export any changes done to images because Snapseed does not save them automatically. Snapseed allows users to edit photos that could certainly be integrated into specific curriuculum content or teaching situations. Photography assignments could easily be developed with the many tools in this app.

  • Tutorial cards with tips and tricks about Snapseed and general photography are available, which indicates that students should be able to successfully utilize this resource.
  • Opens JPG and RAW files, which can be related to curricular content and learning goals.
Concerns:

On specific devices such as iPhone 12 Pro/Max or iPad Air 4th Gen, in order to avoid freezing, the user should use the selfie camera in 'Zoom out' mode before shooting or keep the device in landscape orientation.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Snapseed has an interface that is clear and simple. Users add a photo from their phone collection and then choose Looks, Tools, or Export along the bottom. Choosing Looks provides several filters for the image. Tools provides a range of options for making adjustments to the photo from rotating or cropping it to making it black and white. The Export choices are very clear. Users can share, open the photo in another app or your phone's photo album, save it with changes, save it with a copies, or export it with permanent changes. The directions are all there. Tapping the three dots in the upper right corner opens three items: Tutorials (over 30), help and feedback, and settings for the app. Snapseed lets users share their photo creations directly to their iPhone library, send it in an email, or upload it to Facebook or Twitter. 

  • Up to six individuals will be able to use this app with "Family Sharing" enabled. This may be attractive to students.
  • Works with a mobile phone, the device that many traditional students use for image and video capturing. This indicates that students may have some familiarity in working with the app as a first-time user.
  • There is a wide assortment of features available, which indicates that the app is customizable and flexible for students' needs.
  • Tips and guides are available.
Concerns:
  • There are reviews indicating bugs while using the app and needed improvements on the developer's website.
