This site is a complex teaching site for a variety of learning about osteoporosis and bone physiology. Also included are the many different clinical aspects of bone disease including diagnosis and treatment. There are a number of additional components such as bone related nutrition for children and a Bone Biology for Kids link
Type of Material:
This material is primarily text along with various slides, X rays, and other visuals useful for learning the materials. There are some simulations as well as traditional and interactive quizzes to text knowledge.
Technical Requirements:
The technical requirements for use are minimal. A fairly fast IPS would be helpful but is not necessary.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
The primary goal of this material is to teach the physiology and pathophysiology of bones. There are additions goals of diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
Target Student Population:
The target student population is medical students and residents. However, this material can be used for other health science students. The Bone Biology for Kids could be used as an example of interactive health education materials.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
The student will need basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
There is complex coverage of the content. There is also excellent documentation of the extant research literature for the recommendations. These are supported by hyperlinks to the specific articles.
Concerns:
The site is very large and there are a few grammatical errors. Also, occasionally there is the author?s opinion but these are always labeled as opinion.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
Faculty can uses these materials in a variety of ways. There can be a focus on bone physiology alone or can also include the latest recommendations for therapy.
Concerns:
There could be slightly better instructions but the lack of these does not significantly detract. Some sections are still under construction, but there is plenty of content already in place.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The user can scroll to the portion to be reviewed easily from the outline. No additional software is required. This reviewer has a very slow IPS and this did not cause major problems.
Concerns:
Again, slightly better instructions would help.
