Overview: Teacher Mentoring and Links to Recent Research Highlights website provides
educators with online access to research projects and publications that address
mentoring in teacher professional development.

Quote from submission page: "Many professions, law and medicine among the
best-known, place student apprentices in real-world, clinical situations
early
in their training. Traditionally, many beginning teachers have entered the
classroom with only minimal opportunity to interact with students and learn
from
master teachers. In its 1996 report, "What Matters Most: Teaching for
America's
Future," the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future
recommended
restructuring the first years of teaching to resemble a medical residency,
where
new teachers could be mentored by experienced practitioners. This resource
includes articles, research, video clips, and resources about mentoring."
Learning Goals: The learning goal for this site is to assist educators to become more
knowledgeable of effective mentoring. This website provides a variety of
resources to accomplish this goal.
Target Student Population: The target audience for this site could be preservice teachers, master
teachers,
administrators, or anyone else with interests in how teacher education.

website could also be used by higher education level students as online research
materials for teacher mentoring.

Recommended Uses: Teacher educators could use the materials included on this site in preservice

video clips related to teacher mentoring and how it is being restructured within

teacher education.

QuickTime 5.0.2 or greater is required to view the video clips. Just the audio
of the clips is
available for those without access to QuickTime. Links to download both of

Strengths: The Teacher Mentoring and Links to Recent Research Highlights website is part of
the George Lucas Educational Foundation, a nonprofit operating foundation, that
documents and disseminates models of the most innovative practices in the
United States K-12 schools.

This site is part of a larger site looking at reform in teacher education.
Teacher mentoring is just one aspect of that reform. The comprehensiveness
of
this portion of the site is impressive and also includes a large collection
of mentor
articles by many well known authors.
Concerns: None

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: The Teacher Mentoring and Links to Recent Research Highlights website could be a
wonderful resource on teacher mentoring for higher education at the
undergraduate or graduate level. Faculty could easily incorporate the
information contained on this site into
course content. The QuickTime videos could be shown to highlight certain
piints
in lecture. Students would have an excellent source for writing papers and
completing other related assignments.
Concerns: As a research tool, this site is excellent. Its effectiveness as a teaching
tool seems less clearly defined.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Strengths: The Teacher Mentoring and Links to Recent Research Highlights is an easy to
navigate website. Higher education faculty and students would be able to access
this reference website by using basic computer skills. All pages are designed
in the same
format/layout for easy recognition. Links are categorized and/or listed
logically.The mentor resources are available in several formats, such as an
online article or a pdf file.
