Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The highlighting of the themes as the music plays is a strong feature. The interactive connections between a formal area and the music is also instructive.
Concerns: There is a small error in the alignment of measures for the final closing theme. The link sends you correctly to measure 108 but lists the theme as beginning at measure 124. Also it would be good to show the functional relationship of the keys rather than just there empirical names (e.g. V as well as D major). Scan of score is a bit grainy. The hotspots (for mouse navigation) are small
and a bit difficult to find.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: This flash offers a clear overview of the Sonata Allegro form and invites the student to explore the form interactively. Students can make comparisons among the themes across the entire form very easily. The coordination of the audio with the score is one of its best features.
Concerns: The context for how such a formal analysis of a composition would require a broader context although as it stands it is quite flexible for use in different learning activities.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 5 stars
Strengths: Very easy to use. There are no instructions but after a short time of experimentation it becomes clear how to navigate the form.
Concerns: A short explanation of how to use the tool might help when the student first begins.
