Overview: The Human Resources Instructional Exchange (HRIX) is devoted to the effective
and innovative teaching of Human Resources (HR). This discipline specific,
teaching web site offers a forum and clearinghouse for the open exchange of
ideas, resources, and materials used in teaching HR.The following are specific
areas included
at this site:
1) Syllabus exchange for faculty to post their syllabi
2) Web-based exercises (6 major topic areas covered)
3) HR teaching notes (links to articles and journals dealing with HR)
4) Bulletin board for interactive faculty discussions (not currently available)
5) HR Teaching Marketplace (Books, videos, etc. Could be useful in the future
as not much available currently)
6) HR Links (Great start as each link then links to other useful
resources/publications/teaching tools)

Learning Goals: The goal of HRIX is to become the place to look for ideas on how to design or
improve your HR courses. The primary audience for the HRIX is instructors
teaching courses in HR and related areas, although some features may also be of
value to students and HR practitioners.
Target Student Population: This site has information and resources appropriate for both undergraduate and
post-graduate inquiry. Introductory courses in management principles, human
resource management, organizational behavior, and/or introduction to business
could use this site. It would also be of value in supervisory training and
workforce development. Other uses would be OR-specific advanced level courses
in HR Administration, Employment Practices/Law, Recruitment and Hiring,
Compensation and Benefits, Training and Development, Labor Relations, Health,
Safety, & Security, etc.

Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Exposure to basic human resource management and organizational
behavior/development as well as motivation concepts, practices, and theories and
psychology associated human resource management would facilitate academic,
personal, and professional inquiry.
Type of Material: Multidimensional. Content ranges from drill and practice and animation in the
web based exercise component at the site to teaching notes and lecture/lesson
plans. Opportunities for syllabus exchange and a fairly comprehensive HR
Teaching Marketplace for one stop shopping of HR information is also a key
feature. You have to visit this site to experience the richness this site
affords.
Recommended Uses: The site can be used for extra credit assignments, professional development,
and/or homework assignment. It is an excellent link to maintain for an
instructor?s web page of web resources. It is also of value for personal and
professional development purposes. The site is great for finding information
for research assignments, as it provides links to journals, specific articles,
professional organizations, government agencies, etc.

Technical Requirements: Internet access and ability to navigate the web from appropriate browser
platforms.

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 5 stars
Strengths: The site is sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management and the
Fisher College of Business-The Ohio State University. The excellent reputation
of both institutions lends great credibility to this module.

One strength is the comprehensive nature of the site and the focus on enhancing
instructional design and content. The site is well organized and structured and
easy to navigate. There is a wide range of areas to cover most interests.

The web-based exercises were evaluated for Content Quality: Content Quality was
clear, concise, current, and relevant. It provided accurate information, an
adequate amount of material, and information useful in several situations
Concerns: While the site is comprehensive in terms of overall content, some areas are not
deep in material provided. It is still a relatively new site and some areas are
under construction. It is useful as a resource within specific course content
or assignments only. We did not find any ?stand alone? exercises.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: This is a one-stop shop for information relevant for teaching professionals and
practitioners in the HR field. It is wonderful as a supplement to those
teaching intro to business, principles of management, organizational behavior,
and/or human resource management. It allows the user to apply what they are
being exposed to and react to situations that require they construct responses
that articulate behaviors with consequences and feelings in an interactive and
experiential manner.
Concerns: Due to the breath of material available at this site, it can be overwhelming.
However the site design and structure facilitates access and navigation is
straightforward and concise. Some areas are under construction.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 5 stars
Strengths: The site is easy to use and will generate discussion
Concerns: None

Other Issues and Comments: Some links provide opportunities to interact with other faculty teaching HR.
This would provide an excellent resource for ?new? professors to this field.
