Microbe Zoo

Ratings

Overall Rating:

4 stars
Content Quality: 4 stars
Effectiveness: 3.7 stars
Ease of Use: 4.5 stars
Reviewed: Apr 15, 2005 by Biology Editorial Board
Overview: The major portion of this site is devoted to links to various attractions in a
virtual zoo divided into environments such as Dirtland, Animal Pavillion, Space
Advewnture, Water World, and the Snack Bar. Visitors to each environment are
provided with information about microbial specimens and in many cases there are
links to micrographs of the microbes. Some of the pages feature animations,
others contain a feature called "Try This", which presents some additional
investigation that a student can carry out independently. There is an
information booth which provides help in navigating the site as well as linking
to a brief introduction to microbes an microbial ecology. It also includes micrograph pictures of some genera of bacteria in a CD-ROM format with study guides and additional material.
Learning Goals: The learning goals are focused on providing students with a resource to master
Microbial Ecology at a basic level. It is designed with a life application
approach. Students can see the knowledge in action as soon as they finish the
reading, they just need to go to their backyard.
Target Student Population: middle school, high school, introductory biology in college
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Basic introduction to life science
Type of Material: Interactive lesson
Recommended Uses: Self exploration by students with or without an assignment by instructor
Technical Requirements: None

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths:

  • Attractive design with clever interface in the form of zoo pavillions allows individualized explorations and is engaging to user.
  • Unique and interesting microbes presented in a way that appeals to curiosity and should encourage a desire to explore.
  • Very good reference, excellent strategy of "real life" application.
Concerns:

  • This site appears to have been started but not completed. What is there is first rate but many examples are not accompanied by text or photos.
  • The site does not seem to have been updated since 1999. For example there are no microbes of the month beyond Nov. 1999
  • Limited amount of activities and information in most areas. This website have a companion CD-ROM which I have not reviewed and may provide additional material.
  • It can be expanded to cover an entire semester of Microbial Ecology.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 3.7 stars
Strengths:

  • Great idea to cultivate interest and curiosity
  • "Try this" encourages continued independent exploration and problem solving
  • Promotes understanding of relationship of microbes to environment and importance of microbes to the planet
  • Photos represent morphological diversity within the microbial world
Concerns:

  • The incompleteness of the text and photographic displays limits the use of the site.
  • Limited amount of activities and information in most areas. This website have a companion CD-ROM which I have not reviewed and may provide additional material.
  • It can be expanded to cover an entire semester of Microbial Ecology.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths:

  • There are several paths that can be used to visit the zoo and each one is easy to navigate.
  • The writing is at an appropriate level to appeal to and inform
    non-microbiologists.
  • The concept of the zoo is a wonderful approach to relate microbes to familiar experiences.
  • No technical requirements or special software or plug-ins.
Concerns:

  • Need to use back button all the time; may get lost moving through indirect paths.
  • Several photos or links are not working. The links from the Zoo outline are not all the same as from going directly to each environment (2,4 d degradation not at the toxic dump site; none of links are in Habitat on Humanity)
  • Limited amount of activities and information in most areas. This website have a companion CD-ROM which I have not reviewed and may provide additional material.

Other Issues and Comments: Students can use this website as a quick-reference guide
