Identify Major Learning Goals:
Learning Chinese characters
Target Student Population:
Beginning level students
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
This module presents animations of characters used in the textbook Practical Chinese Reader I. Both traditional and simplified characters are presented. They are in clear Kaishu style, and each stroke is presented at an appropriate speed. In addition, each lesson is accompanied by a calligraphy practice sheet.
The calligraphy practice sheets could be more useful by including numbers indicating the stroke order of each character. Unfortunately, the selected sheets could not be printed out as hard copies.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Users can easily choose a lesson and practice the characters. The stroke-by-stroke demonstration of each character is very suitable for self-study and review. Sound recording and pinyin spelling are provided to further help the user to learn the pronunciation. There is also English translation/definition for each character.
Pinyin tones should be in diacritic marks.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
The module is user friendly, and no special software is required.
Some pages take time to load, and the web site could be enhanced with more colorful backgrounds/graphics.
