Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.4 stars
Strengths: The Time Value of Money is a simple, straight forward tutorial. It covers all of the areas most students
need. Concepts are introduced progressively, building on prior concepts. The module contains audio that plays pretty well. Teachers and students could learn a lot in a relatively short time.
Concerns:
  • Learning objectives are not stated, nor are the prerequisite skills required identified.
  • Because it is one long tutorial rather than a series of tutorials that can be
accessed using a menu, students may feel overwhelmed having to sit down for over an hour to complete it.
  • The problems in the handouts state the problem and then provides a solution
but do not always show the computations.
  • The narration occassionally mentions topics not included in the slides such as the present
    value of an annuity.

  • Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

    Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The tutorial is well done and user friendly from the standpoint of execution. The narration is
clear and concise and the handouts are well done. The illustrations are clear.
    Concerns:

    1. Users cannot jump directly to a topic of interest. Linear progression from the beginning of the module is required every time.

    2. No main menu is provided to serve as a table of contents for the segments being covered.
    3. The narration seems to be one long commentary rather than being linked to
      individual slides.
    4. Even though tables are provided the narration references pages in a textbook and the specific text is not identified.
    5. More graphics are needed to engage students. For instance, a time line could be introduced in each case to aid the visual understanding of the scenario.
