Overview: The Information Literacy and Writing Assessment Project was designed by the
University of Maryland for the purpose of creating an information literacy and
writing assessment project that provides training and resources to assist
faculty in designing, implementing, and assessing student writing and research
skills.
Learning Goals: Faculty may the assignments on this web site to promote the cross-curricular
objectives of information literacy and effective writing within a given
discipline, or they may use such assignments to promote other disciplinary
learning objectives.
Target Student Population: Faculty and Librarians. This site would be useful for anyone who needs to create
assignments.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Understand the basic tenants of information literacy, and understand the use of
the Web.
Type of Material: Tutorial for Developing and Evaluating Assignments for Information Literacy.

Strengths: To promote active learning, the assessment tools provided at this web site focus
not only on the finished products of research and writing but comprise the
whole process. The tools are also designed to be used not only by instructors
but by students themselves as self-assessment tools.
Concerns: The materials are somewhat focused on the learning resources available at the
Univeristy of Maryland.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Strengths: This is not a teaching tool, but an assessment tool to evaluate the information
literacy content of a course.
Concerns: The site gives guidelines to create information literacy working tools in hopes
that as they are modified and validated for use in various disciplines they
prompt a general discussion of assessment practice. This site provides
guidelines only.
