Visions and Strategic Plans: Who Needs Them?

Ratings

Overall Rating:

3 stars
Content Quality: 3.5 stars
Effectiveness: 3.5 stars
Ease of Use: 5 stars
Reviewed: Jun 29, 2006 by Business Editorial Board
Overview: Short "How-To" regarding how to organize to create a vison/strategic plan.
Learning Goals: There are no learning goals indicated but the material appearsd to develop in
the reader an understanding of when an organization or component of the
organization needs to conduct strategic planning and/or develop a vision, some
of the steps for planning and executing strategic planningand/or developing a
vision, and some of the barriers to planning
Target Student Population: MBA students (my guess--there is no stated target in the document). The
material
is suitable for MBA students and maybe executives. It is too terse for
undergarduates.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Basic knowledge of strategy. One previous strategy class would be nice, but not

required. One basic Org. Behavior class is recommended.
Type of Material: Short, "How-To" guide.
Recommended Uses: May be useful in business policy classes, organizational change courses, BPR
courses or workshops that address the same materials.

Reference material for use as a reminder/summary of some strategic planning and
vision creation basics. NOT suitable as a standalone resource for learning how
to craft a vision or strategic plan.

Technical Requirements: Web browser, internet connection (hi-speed not needed).

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 3.5 stars
Strengths: Short and to the point.

Gives a good understanding of the mindset necessary to engage in
vision/strategic plan creation.
Concerns: Does not appear to be more than print material loaded online, nothing special
about it in the online community. Also short on practical aspects of
implementations and does not discuss practical barriers to success.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 3.5 stars
Strengths: It is short with solid content. Students will read it.

It is very suitable for use in an online "reader," but as supplemental
materials only. There should be an anchor document (e.g., a chapter in a text
book).

Concerns: The material is not interactive, does not allow the user to fill in the matrix
used as a tool. No active links to addiotnal materials from the models or
matrix. There is more to palanning/vision creation than this guide offers. It
also seems to have a slight BPR bias, but this is not a major worry.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 5 stars
Strengths: Simple html web page. No hyperlinks of note.

Writing is clear and concise.
Concerns: More on process would be desirable. Though there is a lot of detail regarding
how to think about strategic planning, the utter lack of examples decreases the
ease of use/comprehension somewhat.

Other Issues and Comments: There is more to strategic planning than this learning tool avers, and the
author should offer some additional references for more detailed information.
The piece is not by itself suitable as a template/guide for actually crafting a
vision/strategic plan. It IS, however, a very interesting summary of some of the
major concerns and requirements for vision/plans. This is perhaps the most
concretely useful aspect of the tool.
