This is an interactive game where the player must identify the microbe causing an outbreak of an illness by selecting appropriate tests based on clues related to symptoms and specimen type. The students are presented with a patient's sample and some symptoms from the patient. They then must decide which tests to run and interpret the results. User can select among three degrees of difficulty which include; student, lab technician and medical technologist. There is a Procedure Manual which describes the different disease causing organisms and the different tests that can be run. Effectively using this site requires a lot of background knowledge in Pathogenic Bacteriology and Virology
Evaluation and Observation
Quality of content: (2) (3) (4) = 3.0
Material was up to date and accurate
Some vocabulary requires prior knowledge to fully appreciate
Resource manual provides informative flow charts for specimen handling and information on array of tests
Very complete examination of the procedures followed in a clinical microbiology laboratory.
Simulates real outbreak activities including the time it takes to get results
Very current with regards to tests performed.
Content was not integrated well
Was very interactive, but not very engaging. Students found the answer to a problem, but did not explore concepts beyond making a diagnosis.
Could use more illustrations in the manual so that running the test is not the first exposure to the images
The role of the result interpretation list in the manual is unclear
Choices include most common pathogens but are limited to 19 organisms
A student using this site needs to have already mastered most of the content. A good site to review and apply materials, but not very useful for learning them for the first time.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Ratings:(4) (3) (3) = 3.33
Can learn major strategies and tests while playing since provides a resource manual
Requires user thought and decision-making but provides guidance
Could promote conceptual understanding difficulty in moving through the site will impede this
Good problem solving/critical thinking components
Could be used as a review at the end of a Pathogenic Bacteriology course
Interactive and fun to play and will engage students
Overall objectives of site were not clearly stated
Not sure what the different levels mean, saw no distinction between student and med tech categories
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Ratings: (3) (2) (2) = 2.3
Highly interactive and responsive to user choices
Well-designed and illustrated
A bit confusing at first but help file does help. The help file is essential to using this site. Students should be directed to this site immediately.
Site was not very clearly laid out, it was difficult to decide where materials were located.
Difficult to run additional tests after the first round. It was Difficult to maneuver through the site to perform additional tests.
Instructions were not clear, writing was very technical for a student-oriented site.
Links to Help, Procedure Manual and Supervisor should be clearer. Perhaps link the words themselves.
After moving through much of the site I could not get back to the homepage without retyping the address making it difficult to change user level.
Incomplete instructions for Mac users.
Needs some illustrations/photos added to the manual.
