Ratings

Overall Rating:

4.5 stars
Content Quality: 4 stars
Effectiveness: 4.5 stars
Ease of Use: 4.75 stars
Reviewed: Jun 08, 2007 by Business Editorial Board
Overview: This module presents content material on the Product Life Cycle and the BCG matrix and then outlines an assignment for students to apply these tools (as well as a SWOT) in preparing an analysis of 3M's Post-it-notes.
Learning Goals: To apply basic tools (PLC, BCG matrix, & SWOT) in developing a product analysis with strategic implications for a firm;
Target Student Population: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in marketing management and business strategy courses.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Students should have a basic understanding of the marketing of products and services, definitions and concepts such as the market, market share, strategy development (to name a few), and a foundation of new product development. This module is not designed to stand alone without prior instruction.
Type of Material: Drill and Practice
Recommended Uses: The module is very flexible; depending on the extensiveness wanted, it can be done entirely in the classroom (by individuals or groups), done partially inside and partially outside the classroom, or entirely outside the classroom. The items provided lend themselves to primary instruction, lecture support and/or homework/reinforcement activities.

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The internet links are helpful in providing the good background information for students to complete the assignmnet. While there would need to be some modifications (see comments below), the content of the module overall is pretty comprehensive in providing the tools an instructor would need to use this assignment. The module is based in fact, and provides an excellent real-world application of product life cycle and Boston matrix. The amount of included material, though specific to these two topics, is thorough enough to complete the exercise, is easy to understand and creates opportunities for many other uses inside or outside of the classroom. The module as written is step-by-step, and requires little outside preparation.
Concerns: none

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: Provides multiple use opportunities.
Concerns: There are a few spots in the PowerPoint where bulleted points have question marks following the statement. This may present some confusion to students working independently, and either needs to be corrected prior to display or accompanied by a text/lecture. Additionally, the module isn’t as clear in reviewing prerequisite knowledge, and this, too, would need to be incorporated if the student was working independently. The effectiveness of the assignment would depend upon the modifications the instructor made to the assignment--namely strengthening the discussion of the PLC and SWOT.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: The module as designed is very easy to incorporate into a classroom lecture, and requires minimal outside preparation. It is interesting, incorporates a number of easily understandable graphics, and is a relevant, engaging product to discuss. The information and links are presented in a clear and straightforward manner. Students should have no problem accessing the information and following the instructions.
Concerns: Slides need revision and augmentation for this module to be complete. There are some questions in the product portfolio activity that may seem challenging to “newer” students of marketing. Depending on the course, the instructor may need to soften some of these statements and/or totally restructure them to the specific course content discussed.
