Overview: This learning object is part the larger English Works! site developed at Gallaudet University as part of Tutorial & Instructional Programs, a unit of the Center for Academic Programs and Student Services. The purpose of the site, including this activity, is to provide online reading, vocabulary and grammar explanations, and practice. The featured “grammar exercise” offers approximately 50 self-tests on parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, articles, writing exercises and instructions for ESL students.

Content Quality

Rating: 3.5 stars
Strengths: This particular exercise offers the student the opportunity to work at their own pace through of series of exercises testing basic grammar skills. There are several tests under each topic heading including nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, prepositions and articles. Each individual test has at least 10 questions related to the topic and the answer can be chosen from a drop down menu. A variety of objective testing styles are used including multiple choice, fill-in the blanks, and ordering.
Concerns: Rationale is not provided for wrong answers. Students can continue to select choices until the right answer is selected.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 3.5 stars
Strengths: Based on principles of mastery learning there are sufficient practice activities on the subject matter. Prior instruction is necessary in grammar rules and parts of speech if this tool is to be used as intended, as a tutorial drill and practice.
Concerns: A component of mastery learning not evident in this learning object is the provision for correcting wrong answers. Therein lies the potential for the students to make persistent errors.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The site is easily navigable and activities are clearly presented.
Concerns: All exercises open in a new window. Some could not be maximized which may be distracting.
