Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4.25 stars
Strengths: This short video clip provides a message to youths about the dangers of getting into credit card debt. The CPAs in the video who provide advice are credible professionals perceived by the public as authorities on financial matters. The target audience is youths and emphasis is placed on starting to save early. This module provides a clear message to children to start planning their finances at an early age.
Concerns: The video clip does not go into enough depth or contain sufficient material to thoroughly cover the topic of financial literacy. In fact, it does not teach any financial literacy concepts but rather it focuses on providing tips. The tips only scratch the surface of what needs to be taught in detail. Also, no citations or references on where to go for more information is included.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The way the video moves to related topics reinforces concepts. The following topics are covered in less that 2.5 minutes: immediate satisfaction, living beyond your means, getting in debt, the proliferation of credit card offers, needs versus wants, digging a hole and getting out, save early – save often, budgeting, setting personal financial goals, being disciplined, investing in 401k plans, The role of long-term thinking, living for today but planing for tomorrow. The module can be used as an opener in the classroom to encourage group discussion on financial literacy.
Concerns: Learning objectives are not identified. The ordering of the content seems random as no introduction, summary, or particular order to the information presented is apparent. The module covers tips only. Many of the financial literacy terms and phrases such as credit card debt, keeping up with the Joneses, needs vs. wants, save early, save often, create a budget, set financial goals, pay yourself first, and invest in a 401k plan are concepts/topics which were mentioned but need to be covered in detail in a classroom setting.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.25 stars
Strengths: This module is a video clip (audio and visual) with some text and is very easy to use. The presentation is engaging with background music which is appealing to the viewer. The interspersion of graphics between interview segments reinforces the visual imprinting of information. The video is non-threatening and uses different ages and genders in presenting the subject.
Concerns: The video clip is a somewhat passive way of presenting the subject. No interactivity exists and the material is of a simple design.

Other Issues and Comments: The 2:25 minutes is time well spent if it gets young people to start thinking about their responsibilities to themselves in this area.
