Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The content is logically presented and is at an appropriate level for the intended audience. The quizzes are appropriate for the content presented. The tutorial contains a great deal of well-organized information.
Concerns: While the tutorial includes specifics for American University, most of the content is applicable to those at other institutions. However, the section on search strategies is targeted for American University's students.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: Each section of the tutorial includes clear objectives and meets these objectives. The information is presented in a logical order, but students may easily navigate to specific sections of interest. Well organized, builds advanced concepts progressively. Provides quizzes and some interactivity.
Concerns: Because of the amount of material, care must be taken with assignments to not overwhelm students.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: While lacking bells and whistles that may be expected of online tutorials in today's world, the information is easily accessible and the format is appropriate for the intended use. Easy to use, some good use of images, and well written.
Concerns: The bolding and differing colors of terms and headers is at times confusing and distracting. While the tutorial instructions explains some of the use of color, at times, the color seemed misused. While immediate feedback to the quizzes is desirable, the pop-up boxes are tedious and may not be the best way to provide such feedback. Some pages are very text-heavy, a better use of whitespace might be possible.
