Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 5 stars
Strengths: 1. Tutorial describes 6 strategies that can be used to search MERLOT for learning objects. The strategies are quick and easy to understand and apply. 2. The tutorial uses audio with the screen captures to reinforce the search steps. The instructions are clear and concise. 3. The length of the tutorial is good and the 6 strategies included will adequately prepare the user for whatever purpose they so desire.
Concerns: The video took a long time to load and begin playing. The text on the screens is quite small which would make it difficult to read, thus requiring the user to pay close attention to the audio descriptions.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: This is a very easy tutorial to use. A link can be provided to begin loading the tutorial and there are controls at the bottom of the screen to navigate or pause the tutorial. The selection of screens for navigation is good and the audio is clear. The speaker's voice is relaxed and conversational and includes a good pace for the listener. The speaker includes personal strategies or best practices for using the specific search tools within MERLOT. These are very helpful. Some of the screens (but not all) include red arrows pointing to specific areas that the speaker is addressing. This helps the user to focus and will help the user to remember where to look when trying the strategy. The first screen has a list of the agenda items or strategies that will be addresses. The user summarizes at the end to reinforce.
Concerns: The print on the screenshots is rather small and may be difficult for some users to read. Not all of the screens use the red arrows. Some screens do not have any arrows and one screen has a yellow arrow instead of red so the user may miss that one. The material loads slowly.

Other Issues and Comments: This is an excellent example of a straightforward online tutorial.
