| Overview: |
This material includes a set of learning modules with a test for each module concerning pressure ulcers. CEUs are granted for the successful completion of modules and tests. The modules include: 1) staging of pressure ulcers; 2) Other wound types; 3) Prevalence study protocol; and 4) Community vs Hospital/Unit PU. Colorful photographic visual images for each description of pressure ulcer staging and wound types are included. In the prevalence study, several illustrations are used for demonstration. The questions on the exams include immediate feedback for the answers with multiple choice knowledge based questions used. The Community vs. Hospital/Unit PU test includes life-like scenarios. All information is referenced. Keywords are: pressure ulcer, decubitus ulcer, wounds, medical-surgical nursing. |
| Learning Goals: |
As the author states: The stated purpose of this interactive tutorial is to provide a "comprehensive overview of pressure ulcer identification, staging and NDNQI(R) prevalence study procedures for accuracy in data collection." The module is available for nursing continuing education credit.
The stated learning objectives are:
- Accurately stage pressure ulcers from photographs and wound description
- Differentiate a pressure ulcer from other types of wounds
- Describe pressure ulcer data collection procedures
- Distingush among a community-acquired, hospital-acquired and unit-acquired pressure ulcer
|
| Target Student Population: |
This learning module would be also be useful for nursing & medical students, practicing nurses & physicians studying skin disorders and care for clients with pressure ulcers. |
| Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: |
The learner would need to know something about anatomy and physiology to grasp the concepts and understand the terminology. The first two modules would be really good for beginning nursing students, but the last two modules would probably require a higher level of knowledge and experience on clinical units. |
| Type of Material: |
The learning resource is a tutorial which includes case studies, graphics, and a quiz for each of the four learning modules. |
| Recommended Uses: |
It would be good for nursing students throughout their medical surgical courses because it moves from simple to complex. Different modules could be used for nursing students at different levels of expertise.
The learning resource could be used as a homework assignment in preparation for a lecture or as a homework assignment as a review after a lecture. It could also be used in the classroom with a student response system to assess learning after the content was reviewed. |
| Technical Requirements: |
Technical requirements are a browser (works best with Explorer 6.0) and java. Cookies and pop-ups must be allowed. No sound is required. |

| Strengths: |
Strengths: The content is valid, accurate, and reliable.
- The staging of the pressure ulcers is taken directly from NDNQI.
- The photographs and illustrations are helpful for the learner to relate the material to reality.
- No important or relevant information is overlooked in the material. It provides excellent, basic information regarding pressure ulcer staging and monitoring.
- The content is current with no missing pieces of information.
- The concepts are significant for any nursing student, medical student or healthcare provider, because pressures ulcers are a concern for any patient who is immobile for a period of time. Every healthcare provider will eventually encounter a patient with the potential for pressure ulcers or with actual ulcers.
- The material in the first two modules is rather simple and straight-forward, however the second two modules are more complex and require some critical thinking.
- It would be difficult to teach this material without the availability of the photographs and illustrations included in these modules.
- The links are definitely appropriate, because they point the learner to additional material on the subjects.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool |
Rating: |
|
| Strengths: |
- The pictures and descriptions in the first two modules allow the learner to see each skin pressure area up close and personal. This is not always possible in a textbook due to the expense of color plate use.
- This material could be used in a classroom setting or for individualized self-paced instruction.
- I can see that it could be used effectively to teach nursing students as a first-time introduction or with practicing healthcare providers as a means for continuing education and a way to improve the quality of care.
- The material definitely facilitates learning because the photographs and descriptions allow the learner to apply the information in the clinical setting. It makes the material actually come alive for the learner so the learner can truly see the relevance without effort.
- The concepts are presenting clearly, moving from simple to complex.
- The immediate feedback to the test answers with rationales also will assist the learner in retaining and learning the material.

| Concerns: |
Learners who are auditory learners will have difficulty with this style of learning, because there is a lot of reading and there are visual illustrations. The learning resource would be enhanced with audio and video components. |

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty |
Rating: |
|
| Strengths: |
The learner should have no difficulty is using this learning material. It is easy to navigate with the use of the sidebar and a top menu for each section. There was very little wait time for feedback with test questions. No instruction is necessary for the learner to use these materials and it is self contained with no instructions or instructor necessary. The design is clear and legible with no distracting backgrounds or illustrations. All parts are clearly labeled and navigable. No major bugs were identified. |
