Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4.25 stars
Strengths: This short tutorial does a good job of introducing learners to the variety of resources available from a library. It also defines many common bibliographic terms which may not be familiar to new library users.
Concerns: The presentation of some basic concepts tends to be oversimplified to the point of possibly conveying misinformation. Student learning outcomes are implied and not explicitly stated. It is not readily apparent why it is necessary for students to know the definition of information literacy as opposed to the significance of acquiring the skills associated with information literacy.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: Objectives of the tutorial are clearly explained and an approximate completion time provided in advance of beginning the tutorial. All terminology is defined. Motivational techniques are utilized to encourage use of multiple and best resources available.
Concerns: Questions or a final quiz located within the tutorial itself would further reinforce learning of the concepts. Presentation of some basic concepts tends to be oversimplified and student learning outcomes are not explicitly identified.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 3.75 stars
Strengths: The tutorial is attractive with good use of supporting graphics and appealing animations. Navigational elements are clear and consistent. Very easy to use, the tutorial incorporates a number of common and familiar navigational tools.
Concerns: Little interactivity is available. Instructional content is presented in a flat, one dimensional, text/screen shot only mode. No attempt is made to incorporate activities promoting student interaction with the content other than the inclusion of a quiz designed to measure how much information was retained. The information presented on each slide is very dense and the arrangement of text and screen shots was executed in such a fashion that it is easy to overlook some of the content being presented. The animation oftentimes times is distracting and inhibits reading.
