Overview: The 4:45 minute YouTube presentation provides a very basic overview of XBRL for financial reporting. It demonstrates the basic features of Altova MissionKit’s MapForce, a data extraction and mapping application, and StyleVision, a graphical style sheet designer used to generate XBRL reports.
Learning Goals: This marketing presentation serves to introduce the viewer to Altova’s XBRL tools, MapForce and StyleVision,

  • Individuals charged with preparing financial reports for public companies who are investigation XBRL software tools.
  • Students taking an Accounting Systems course.
  • Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
  • A strong working familiarity with accounting,financial reporting, and / or database software.

    Recommended Uses: While showcasing basic features of Altova's XBRL tools, the video does provide accounting educators and students with a nice summary of the importance of XBRL (extensible business reporting language), the new standard form of SEC reporting and financial analysis.

  • Sound card and speakers.
  • High-speed internet access.
  • Web browser (Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3 was used when reviewing the presentation).

    Strengths:
  • Provides clear and concise information about the two products highlighted in the demonstration.
  • Content is current and relevant.
  • Professionally developed presentation is engaging.
  • Author provides audience with an excellent summary of the basics of XBRL.
  • Concerns:
  • Viewing the applications’ screen shots within the YouTube window is somewhat difficult.
  • This short video does not provide a complete demonstration of XBRL.
  • The module is limited in flexibility given the promotional nature of its content.

    Strengths: Teachers and students will grasp a very limited, but basic overview of XBRL in a short time.
    Concerns:
  • The video presentation is largely promotional material showcasing basic features of Altova’s XBRL software tools. As a result prerequisite knowledge has not been identified.
  • Other than viewing the presentation, developing assignments to coincide with the video would seem impractical.
  • Relationships between concepts do not seem to be demonstrated.
