Overview: Specifically related to the Wheel of Life, this is a workshop for the tool that is a part of a collection of related materials, or a repository, all related to life coaching. The Wheel of Life could be used with Middle School students, but would gain more meaning as life experience increases, through undergraduate and graduate education. Students will be able to demonstrate how their attention is oriented and use the tool to assist in establishing goals (for refocusing). This would be a good group exercise earlier in educational levels and as an informative exercise in andragogy exercises.
Learning Goals: Understand how the Wheel of Life tool can help one improve life balance by graphically identifying the areas one wants to devote more energy and understand where one might want to cut back. Users will be able to describe current focal points in their life and compare to other focal points
Target Student Population: Business education in high school through graduate studies.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: None
Type of Material: Workshop Training Material
Recommended Uses: Overall use would be best in beginning of a grade level to teach (promote) focus and balance in living. Wheel could be adapted to apply balance within projects or work decision making and goal setting. Best used as a discussion exercise within a group. There are courses with sections dealing with balancing personal and work life, human resources and organizational behavior.
Technical Requirements: Used Internet Explorer 8, Adobe Flash Player 10, and need Adobe Reader to print worksheet, if desired

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 3.5 stars
Strengths: The material provides a walk-through discussion of what the tool is, does, and how to recreate the tool using personal choices or aspects, allowing the users to be able to recreate the tool when it is perceived as needed. The learner will leave the presentation with knowledge of how to use and apply the tool.
Concerns: The content is a stand-alone tool that would be better served if mention of adaptation for specific aspects of life or work projects. It illustrates where attention is given, but not an interpretation or explanation of how or recommended shift of balance. The end result is left open to user interpretation and the facilitator must step in to achieve best results from use.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 2.5 stars
Strengths: The Wheel of Life presentation provides a foundation for future use in related, life coaching, events, and can be adapted to be used generally or with specific regard, IE identifying focus/balance within a business project. The material provides a step by step explanation in rebuilding the wheel.
Concerns: The Wheel of Life does not go further than constructing the wheel and describing the purpose. In that regard, the facilitator is tasked with making the wheel relevant. It does not define or include scenarios that may help the learner understand why or the effects of their current balance (wheel) structure. It does not correlate to types of goals, decisions, or lifestyles that may have a similar design or what design is suitable for shifting focus.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.25 stars
Strengths: The information is presented on one page, explaining how to use and build a Wheel of Life. The learner is provided with an option to interatively build a wheel on the website or to print a blank template they can complete off-line.
Concerns: The webpage included a pop-up to join and receive a newsletter, which would be distracting for the learner upon first entry and every time they reenter the page. Several banners are included on the webpage linking within the website and discussing becoming a member, receiving the newsletter, or making related purchases.

Other Issues and Comments: The Wheel of Life is a good tool for informative purposes in learning about goal setting and how decisions are impacted by lifestyle, but it stops short of developing the learner in using the tool. One more step is needed to give the learner a basis for comparison, a benchmark.
