Overview: ClassJump.com is website that allows teachers to set up free course websites to use with their students.
Learning Goals: The learning goals will be determined by individual teachers as they set up courses in ClassJump.com From the website: “ClassJump.com provides teachers web sites free of charge, where multiple classes can be managed and updated using an easy to understand interface. No knowledge of web site programming is needed to get your class or classes set up and quickly providing up-to-date information for your students and parents.” Also: “ClassJump.com is for the use and enjoyment of educators, students and parents. It's designed to give students and parents a way to see what homework is due, and for teachers to easily post those assignments, along with documents and related classroom materials.”
Target Student Population: Students in teacher education programs or professional teachers in graduate programs are good target audiences for this tool. Students of middle grades up might also find this tool useful.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Learners should have a basic understanding of how to upload documents to the web. Experience using Web 2.0 applications would also be beneficial.
Type of Material: ClassJump.com is a simple Learning Management System.
Recommended Uses: ClassJump.com can be used by teacher-educators to show teachers-in-training how they might use a website to enhance their instruction. It would be useful as an adjunct to a face to face classroom.
Technical Requirements: Browser, Flash, broadband connection.

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating:
Strengths: Users would create content here. The site uses appropriate pedagogy to enhance community building.
Concerns: None.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: Students taking instructional technology courses often want to know how to create a website for their students. Introducing them to CourseJump.com would be an easy way to address this need and still focus on theory and research-based practices that may be a requirement of the course. CourseJump.com is free to teachers and is structured to help teachers share important documents and information with students and parents.
Concerns: ClassJump.com is the generous creation of a couple of individuals. They are set up as a non-profit and are accepting donations as well as pursuing grant opportunities. Like most freemium services, there are no guarantees that websites will be maintained forever. Those who value this service should make sure to donate and encourage others to do so as well. Users would be wise to make sure they have local backups of all content. The site asks for the city of each teacher during registration. If the city is not listed, the teacher has the option to enter a city. If the school is not listed, the option to enter a school is given. If the school is not listed, the effectiveness of an isolated site is doubtful. While a site is free for teachers, registering the school as an entity carries a reasonable charge

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: ClassJump.com makes it easy for teachers to quickly create course websites. It is also easy for students to create accounts and access their teacher's website. Teachers can collaborate with other teachers who have similar interests. Adding content to a course is as simple as attaching a document to an email message.
Concerns: Reviewers were unable to find a way to quickly see the course site as a student would see it (without all the buttons for contributing more content). Setting up a fake student account would probably work but it would be nice to quickly see what the site looks like to a student. Teachers may be concerned that students can add or change their content without this feature.

Other Issues and Comments: Well designed tool. Useful as an adjunct to various other learning objects. Creates a learning community when used appropriately.
