Overview: The National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science Case collection is a database for case studies. The site includes cse studies from the primary areas of scientific study. The menu is located at the top of the page and is very easy to read. Informational links on how to submit a case study and "Our latest cases" arelisted first. Subject areas are then listed alphabetically. The Psychology section is the only subject area reviewed here. The psychology link brings the reader right to the cases listed in the psychology sub-section. Currently there are 17 cases listed. The case name, author, and teaching notes are given on the left of the page while a brief synopsis of the case is provided on the right hand side of the page.
Learning Goals: The learning goals vary with the case study, but all are designed to promote critical thinking within a specific context.
Target Student Population: The target population is upper level undergraduate and graduate psychology students. Some of the case studies could also be applied to sociology classes.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: A solid foundation of the basic concepts in psychology are necessary in order to fully understand many of these case studies. This is a site for faculty use - not a resource for students.
Type of Material: Reference material for instructor use.
Recommended Uses: Each case study offers recommendations for how they should be used. Most are designed as an activity to be conducted within a single classroom setting. The site can be used for lecture presentation, group assignments, and homework.
Technical Requirements: None.

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: The major strength of the site is that it provides cases that cover many different topics. Each of the case studies is well-referenced. The cases are engaging in their presentation and, generally, quite thought-provoking.
Concerns: The posted date is provided at the end of the case study. Some of the studies are quite old. Many of the studies are useful for background information but are not current. Some of the case studies are also very short, providing very little insight to the topic.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: A major strength is that most of the cases provide teaching notes with discussion questions and talking points. A full reference list is provided for each case which allows for further research to be done on cases of significant interest. The use of a case studies, a form of active learning, is an ideal means of bringing course concepts to life for students.
Concerns: There are only 17 cases listed in the psychology section. The topics covered are specific enough to limit them in their overall usefulness. Those looking for a specific topic may be lucky to find a case study but general research will not use the site often.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: The case studies offer background and directions. In some instances, further information is restricted so as to prevent student access to answer keys.
Concerns: The small number of cases limits its overall usefulness. The cases are not separated by topic so you need to review all the cases in the section to possibly find what you need. Some cases are too short to provide any valuable information. The savvy student might find the site and have advance knowledge of an activity, diminishing its value.

Other Issues and Comments: The site would be a good place to check for an applicable case study for research. It is easy to navigate allowing for a quick look.
