This is an online guide to the text Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases by the same author. It is well organized and easy to navigate. Video clips are used well to demonstrate techniques to examine neurological status. The user has the option to use the menu provided or to search to quickly locate key concepts. Video clips may be accessed via low speed or high speed connections. Individual video clips were fairly short and downloaded ruickly even from a low-speed DSL connection. While the quality of the video was marginal it was adequate to depict the selected concepts.
Type of Material:
The learning resource is best classified as an open interactive textbook. The videos included in the book would be classified as tutorials.
Recommended Uses:
The content and level are appropriate for students in medical school, nurse practitioner, graduate nursing and physician assistant programs as a supplement to classroom instruction and texts.
This site can be used:
• To demonstrate neurologic examination in class.
• As an online tutorial for distance education students.
• As a supplementary learning or revision tool by individual students.
Technical Requirements:
The technical requirements include a computer with broadband Internet access, a web browser, and Quicktime player to view the videos.
Identify Major Learning Goals:
Upon completing this tutorial the student will be able to
*Outline the main components of the neurologic exam.
*Demonstrate how the neurologic exam is performed.
*Identify some types of neurologic dysfunction and relate that back to the underlying neuroanatomy.
Target Student Population:
The target student population includes students in medical school, nurse practitioner programs, graduate nursing and physician assistant programs. May also be used in upper level baccalaureate nursing programs and possibly some other instructional programs for the health sciences and psychology.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
Pre-requisite knowledge includes neuroanatomy, some understanding of neurologic disease and basic computer skills.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The module provides a systematic and comprehensive approach to neurologic examination. In some instances, potential abnormalities and their significance are discussed. Video clips effectively demonstrate major concepts pertinent to neurological examination.
Concerns:
The module would be strengthened by demonstrations of abnormalities.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The outstanding features of this tool are that is a very structured, and systematic approach to learning neurologic examination, and that can be used in multiple settings, for example, in the classroom, by distance students or for revision. The vignettes provided in the video serve to illustrate the basic methods and concepts required for a neurological examination. They do not replace practice but instead supplement the text and help to prepare viewers to conduct the exam themselves.
Concerns:
None.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The site is very clearly structured, and easy to navigate. Links are provided to allow students to download the required software (Quicktime).
Concerns:
Video clip 32 Smooth Pursuit lost its sound partway through the clip. Once in the last link (Review), the back button on the navigation menu does not take the user back to the last link but directs them to an acknowledgements page. Upon continued clicking on the back button, the user is taken to a series of other pages, i.e. copyright, textbook purchasing information, etc., which are not listed on the user menu.
