Overview: This is an 12.28 minute interview with Monica Bugallo, Ph.D, who received a grant from HP. This grant supplied 21 Tablet PC's and audiovisual equipment for students at Stonybrook to do math exercises in the classroom. The title of the presentation is: "How Tablet PC's Empower the Classroom."
Learning Goals: How to use a tablet PC for note taking, journaling, drawing and simulation exercises as a means of mobile learning and sharing. This interview is part of Stonybrook's Innovations in Education series. Teachers interested in the subject will find her experiences interesting.
Target Student Population: High School, College General Ed, College Lower Division, Middle School, College Upper Division
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills: Teachers must be interested in using tablet computers. This site is not targeted to students.
Type of Material: Online interview. There are snapshots of the students working in the labs.
Recommended Uses: Teachers looking for information to support grant proposals will find this interview helpful. Information on the software used and the class structure could help all teachers with tablet-accessible classrooms.
Technical Requirements: Internet browser and headphones or speakers to hear the video.

Evaluation and Observation

Content Quality

Rating: 4.5 stars
Strengths: The strengths of this interview are the tips Dr. Bugallo shared for implementing the grant. She had students use Microsoft One Note and Journal software for taking notes. She divided the class into different sections. A wiki helps students collaborate with each other. Math simulation software, MATHLAB,was on each computer. The video length was just the right amount of time to maintain user interest.
Concerns: I would hope Dr. Bugallo would do research on student outcomes and submit a paper to JOLT. For example, she does frequent student evaluations to find out what is working and what is not. I would appreciate learning student concerns and how they were corrected. It would be helpful to see more of the actual classroom and student applications of use.

Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool

Rating: 4 stars
Strengths: The learning materials consist solely of the interview. Dr, Bigallo was enthusiastic, describing how the set up with tablet computers "helped bring math problems to life." Students did more applied problem solving. She admits that she use the Faculty Center at Stonybrook for support and resources, and teachers watching the interview may not have that level of support. She does survey students frequently to see how the course is going.
Concerns: There is no transcript of the interview. Sometimes the speaker moved and her voice became soft. It was sometimes difficult to understand.

Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty

Rating: 4.75 stars
Strengths: • Extremely easy to use with a variety of browsers. User can stop, pause, and rewind video.
Concerns: There were no examples of specific exercises that Dr. Bugallo used in the class. There were pictures of the students using the computers and software.
