This five (5) minute YouTube video consists of an animated presentation of 'the testing effect' and is narrated by David Myers, an internationally known social psychologist and textbook author. The video includes neo-classical, hand-drawn graphics describing methods for improving studying. Myers describes the testing effect and how to put it into practice using the SQ3R method. With engaging, modernized drawings, easily digestible bits of information, and real-life applications on how to improve study habits, this video is a fantastic piece to use across the educational curricula from Elementary through Undergraduate Education. After viewing the video students will be able to describe the testing effect, describe how they could use the testing effect for studying, describe the SQ3R method and its components, and describe how they could make use of the SQ3R method.
The primary purpose of this learning material is to demonstrate for students how to improve their learning outcomes and study techniques through the use of the method known as the Testing Effect, which requires students to self-test methodically, frequently, and over extended periods of time. After viewing the video students will be able to:
(a) describe the testing effect and its importance;
(b) apply the testing effect when they are studying;
(c) describe the SQ3R method and its components;
(d) apply the SQ3R method to their reading and studying.
Target Student Population:
• The video could be used in any discipline with both lower- and upper-level undergraduate students.
• This video would be a fantastic application in first year incoming freshman study or preparatory sections, particularly at the beginning of a new term. It may also prove useful in learning units/modules on memory, study habits, and testing in college curriculum. It may be appropriately applied at lower levels of the Elementary & Secondary curriculum, as well.

• This video may be applied as an independent viewing activity for students or it may be presented to a group in-class to stimulate discussion regarding good study techniques, the implementation of the testing effect, and the SQ3R method.
• A possible follow-up would be an assignment in which students give specific examples of how they could (or did) use the information from the video as a study aid.
• A basic web browser is needed. The video was accessed for this review using IE9, Firefox, and Safari).
• Used Adobe Flash 11.4+, and all content loaded quickly and with no trouble.
Evaluation and Observation
• The content of this video is based on reliable, valid, and current research in the areas of learning and memory.
• This is a fantastic learning module that delivers a wealth of information in a little over five (5) minutes of a student’s time. The content provides an appropriate level of detail as well as examples of how the material can be applied.
• The material could be used in any discipline to enhance students' abilities to learn and remember material. If students deliberately apply the information from the video, then they will enhance their learning and memory for the class material. The concepts presented in the video are simple and have unlimited application.
• The closed captioning contains some errors that are readily apparent. These should be corrected to ensure students are receiving factual and valid information when accessing this content and using the captioning feature.
• Another issue is the lack of supporting evidence presented alongside this material. While notable researchers receive a nod, an ending slide including these references would add tremendous value to this educational tool.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
• GREAT tool and many, many possible applications and uses across the disciplines in psychology, as well as extending far outside of our own discipline. The video is very engaging and will be easy for students to follow
• The material does not provide objectives nor identify prerequisite knowledge needed for more fully understanding the content. Instructors will need to add this material to their own presentation of the “testing effect. “
• Students may benefit from just viewing the material, but reinforcement of the material with in-class or out of class activities would maximize the benefit.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
• The material is presented in an attractive and engaging way without distracting animation or superfluous features.
• The hand-drawn cartoons are engaging and modern to the current generation, though these may appear dated in just a few years when this fad has passed.
• There were no problems with operating the video at all, nor with the closed captioning. All items worked properly and were very quick to load and easy to use.
• The length is great (approximately 5 minutes); the content in the audio is clear and accurate.
• This module lacks interactivity because it is designed to engage students while they listen and watch. A professor could easily address this area with an assignment to wrap around the activity.
Other Issues and Comments:
• Overall this is an excellent teaching and learning tool.
• Added a link to this video in my undergraduate psychology class in the chapter on cognition and memory!
