This is a business website with different categories of organizaitonal issues which impact performance and focuses on various aspects of management and HR such as retention, benefits, recruiting strategies, search firms, motivation, etc. The different areas are presented as short cases and provide examples of how real companies/organizaitons have addresses the various issues successfully. This tutorial is intended for business professionals who want to find, recruit, and retain employee talent as demonstrated by alumni of the Inc. 500.
Type of Material:
The various aspects of HR and management are presentes as real stories/cases, some are very short, most are longer. The categories have several cases/stories in each area.
Recommended Uses:
Elements can be useful for gen ed, i.e., Business 101, provided more structure is available such as learning outcomes and unit goals. Parts may also useful for units relative to management, leadership and HR, and possibly organizational change. As case studies, these can supplement text books and serve as the basis for applying throries and concepts. The tutorial could be utilized as a supplemental tool for undergraduate students or business professionals who are needing to learn some of the general intricacies relevant to searching for, and keeping, employee talent.
Technical Requirements:
E 9.0 Firefox 15 Java 7 Windows 7
Identify Major Learning Goals:
By the end of this tutorial, students should be able to:
• execute techniques for finding employee talent.
• discover various strategies for recruiting employee talent.
• demonstrate methods for retaining employee talent.
Target Student Population:
Although the initial notes indicate this is intended for general education, this can also be used as elements in general management, HR, and leadership classes at undergraduate levels. This is not appropriate for graduate level unless is used only as general, supplemental information. This tutorial is primarily geared to business professionals who are interested in learning basic information related to finding and retaining employee talent.
Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills:
The stories/cases are introductory level and would be appropriate to use without prequisites.
Content Quality
Rating:
Strengths:
The information is current and relevant; unique approaches are noted by the different organizations to address specific issues; the variety of idustries provides a broad spectrum or possible situations and applications. Strategy is a key component of recruiting and retention, and this is emphasized as part of the HR process as well as a required aspect of the organization.
Concerns:
No learning outcomes are available and need to be developed for areas and sub-areas; specifics on what is expected of students relative to all areas need to be noted as well as how the content ties together to create a systematic approach to HR, management and leadership, and how this all relates to strategy. The primary drawback of the tutorial is the dated material. None of the insights are under 10 years old. Much has changed in the past 10 years.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The strengths of the short cases/stories are their currency and relevance to different approaches in addressing problems which have plagued organizations for years.Once again, this resource is supplemental. It can reinforce ideas related to employee recruitment and retention.
Concerns:
The stories/cases need to be part of a structured, integrated approach to deliver this content. While the real life examples and the currency of the information is important, structure needs tobe developed to relate the content to theory and concepts as well as program and course outcomes.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The access is easy; the general categories in which the stories/cases/examples reside is easy to follow. I like the strategic aproach in that all of these elements are discussed along with strategy which must be part of any HR/management/leadership discourse.
Concerns:
The ad that appears when the initial attempt to access can be confusing- it makes you wonder if you are in the right place. The URL to take you to the right place is fine, but the reader should also know the menu and submenus to the exact locationcan be found again, especially of the reader wants to 'explore' and come back later. When referring student to this site, the instructor needs to let the student know what to expect and how to locate the needed material (and that the site is large with many different topics). The material is dated with all of the alumni sources from the Inc 500 being at least 10 years old, but not totally irrelevant in the search for the right employee talent. The tutorial would be more valuable if this information was updated.
Other Issues and Comments:
There were no other major issues. While the information is good and has potential in a general ed classroom or a lower-level undergraduate business course, the main concern is that this can not (should not) be stand alone information. A significant amount of structure needs to be developed to properly frame this information so it becomes relevant and useful in an appropriate class.
