Evaluation and Observation
This learning object is a great review for high school students who are practicing for the AP exam. It contains dozens of practice problems each with a full worked out explanation of how to solve the given problem. The questions are well thought out and the solutions are clearly presented. The site also shows the percent of attempts that all people were successful answering the question that was just worked on. The site also allows authoring of new questions and has a help button where the user can ask Kaplan questions. The material can help students who are willing to take the AP Calculus exam to review and it offers feedback after feedback after completing the practice. The feedback provides a detailed explanation on how to solve the problems.
The questions are all multiple choice. It would be nice to have some other types of problems such as numerical, fill in the blank, or open ended questions.
Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
The AP Calculus practice is a nice tool that students can use before taking the AP exam in order to get a feel for the problem that they will likely see when they take the exam. Students can clearly see what they understood and did not understand as they are working through the problems given. The material is very helpful as a review for students who are planning to take the AP calculus exam.
Although most of the problems would work for college students, most college students would be turned off by the fact that it is clearly targeted towards high school students. The material does not provide the objectives that the student needs to master how to answer the questions correctly.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
The material has the option to be open. If a student wants to work on the review and for some reason continue in a different time. The review will be open. It provides flexibility but at the same time it provides a detailed explanation on how to answer the questions correctly after submitting the review. The questions are well formatted and the feedback is easy to find. Any student should be able to start practicing without any instruction.
After finishing the questions and reading the summary for the section that is being worked on, it is unclear how to navigate to another section.
