Description:
These learning modules were made possible by The Komen Maryland Affiliate Nursing Partnership: Advancing Education and Practice, a generous grant from the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This online interactive course has six modules and is designed to familiarize you with the causes, pathophysiology, and treatment of breast cancer. Topics include breast cancer epidemiology, risk, screening, staging and grading, treatment, and progression. As you work through the module, you will find links to articles in the scientific literature or to web sites of organizations, such as the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov), Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org), and the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), where reliable additional information about breast cancer is available. Throughout you will find check points, quizzes and activities that will assist you in assessing your learning progress. Objectives After completion of this module, the student should be able to do the following:  State the magnitude of breast cancer as a health care problem in the US.  Describe the risk of breast cancer for the "average woman" and understand risk factors that may increase or decrease a particular woman's chance of developing breast cancer when compared to the "average woman".  State the risks and benefits of mammography when used as a screening tool for women over age 40.  Describe the basis of breast cancer diagnosis and the tools, such as Staging and grading, which are used to determine the best course of treatment.  State the rationale behind various treatments for breast cancer, including how to access documents that substantiate their benefit.  Describe how therapies for symptom management can enable patients to complete a full course of therapy.  Describe the clinical course of metastatic breast cancer and its treatment, including 2nd or 3rd line treatments and end-of-life care.
