Description:
Starting Points 2: How to Communicate Effectively With young English Langugae Learners.

Starting Points 2 teaches a critical set of communication strategies every early childhood educator and child care provider needs to be able to reach English Language Learners. It guides students in learning how to bridge the language barrier, transmit more of the curriculum and reduce guidance problems. This video-based course models how to use nonverbal communication very intentionally to ensure that children 3 to 8 years of age with diverse language backgrounds and diverse learning styles can all take advantage of the learning opportunities presented.

Video demonstrations are a key component of this course. These video segments were captured documentary style in a variety of classrooms and care settings. One video clip highlights a first grade teacher who works with many children whose first langauge is Spanish. Other segments show examples of the strategies presented in the coursework, so that you can see how they are implemented by highly skilled teachers and how children react and respond.
